Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is transparent in the ultraviolet to infrared (180nm-8.0µm) wavelength range. It has a refractive index of 1.428 at a wavelength of 1.064 µm, and has high mechanical and environmental stability. Calcium fluoride is very suitable for applications requiring low damage threshold, low fluorescence and high uniformity. It is commonly used in excimer lasers and spectrometers and cooling thermal imaging.

Uncoated windows have high transmittance in the vacuum ultraviolet (180 nm) to infrared (8.0μm) region.  Due to its low absorption coefficient and high damage threshold, uncoated calcium fluoride crystals have become a common choice for excimer lasers. Calcium fluoride windows are also often used in cryogenic cooling thermal imaging systems.

Calcium fluoride has a low absorption coefficient and high damage threshold, making these windows a better choice for free-space lasers. Optical calcium fluoride provides low dispersion (Abbe number 95) and low fluorescence, as well as good water resistance, chemical resistance and heat resistance. In dry environments, CaF2 can be used up to 1000 °C, but in the presence of moisture, it will degrade above 600 °C. Each window has a randomly oriented crystal axis.
